These days Internet fraud, such as phishing, are on the rise as cyber criminals have discover new ways to lure you into their traps and steel your account details. So today we prepared a guide to help you stay safe online.
What is Phishing ?
This can be explained as an attempt to obtain sensitive information such as passwords, credit card details or username for mischievous reasons by disguising as a trustworthy entity in electronic communication.
Security experts just revealed latest trick, showing that Gmail users are now target of a new phishing campaign that can outsmart anyone including experienced tech users. They do this by using specially created URLs to trick people into entering their Gmail credentials on a phishing website. Once you submit your password, the attacker then uses this details to log into the victim’s Gmail account and then proceeds for a secondary attack targeted at contacts of the victim.
Asides gathering victims contact details they also scan for attachments and appropriate subject lines from your previously sent emails to friends and family. So the secondary attack involve phishing email, sent from your account to people you know containing message and a thumb-nailed version of an attachment, which helps them to takeover more accounts.
Immediately this attachment is clicked a convincing Gmail login box is opened, however this is a trap. A full web page worth of code is entered into the browser’s address bar, as the rest of this code are carefully hidden by whitespaces, all you see is the very beginning and the “https://accounts.google.com” which may cause many to let their guard down.
How to protect yourself from these attacks
These carefully planned attacks can be easily avoided if you enable two-factor authentication in Gmail. With this feature attackers cannot have access to your account without access to this second factor, usually your phone or a USB cryptographic key.
If you suspect that you may already be a victim of the scam, you should immediately change the password of your Gmail account then get rid of any current sessions on your Gmail account activity page that you consider suspicious.
